Let Them by Mel Robbins
A book all about learning to live the life you want because you free yourself from the thoughts and opinions of others that can hold you back from achieving what you want. Mel Robbins is a former lawyer, author, podcaster, speaker all on an international stage. Her book ‘Let Them’ has 19.2k reviews on Amazon with 4.6 stars, she has over 2 million people subscribed to her email, a hugely successful podcast all served with a small side of controversy! This book doesn’t quite fit my normal criteria of book club selection, it is however extremely popular and deserves a spot on the reading list. Whilst the author doesn’t have a particular qualification the book does have a decent list of the research used to write the book. Mel herself says that the book isn’t an academic paper or text book but rather a guide shaped by some of the biggest theories in psychology and human behaviour.
What does the book talk about?
According to the author “let them’ is a "‘method that teaches you how to protect your time and energy and focus on what matters to you” This isn’t a productivity method it instead focuses on stopping the wasted efforts spent caring about other people’s opinions, helping you to look inwards rather than pouring your energy into trying to control other opinions.
Mel Robins has a website that you can access here. She has written 2 other books, ‘The Five Second Rule’ (Amazon’s 6th most read book of the year!) and ‘The High 5 Habit’. There is a wealth of knowledge on her podcast with a wide variety of topic covered and some big hitting guests.
However, success has come not been without it’s problems. A poem was written by Cassie Philips pre-dates Mel Robbins’s supposed initial sharing on Instagram where we spoke about finding out about the ‘let them’ theory. Mel Robbins denies ever seeing the poem.
